Rye in Dutch

On a Dutch label rye reads rogge, and also roggebloem.

What is rye?

Rye is a cereal containing gluten. In the EU it must be named and in bold on the label. Whoever avoids it for gluten usually avoids all of them: wheat (tarwe), rye (rogge), barley (gerst), oats (haver), spelt and khorasan.

Part of Cereals containing gluten: everything about the label, traces and shopping is there.

How to avoid rye

  • Read the ingredient list: in the EU the fourteen legal allergens are printed in bold, also on a Dutch pack.
  • If even a little matters, turn on ‘may contain traces’ in the finder: those products then drop out too.
  • Recipes change: check the label of products you already know, too.
