Accessibility
This site has to be usable if you have low vision or no sight, if you use only a keyboard, or if you make the text large. Here is what has been done, what the Scanner sounds like, and what does not work well yet.
The Scanner without looking at the screen
The Scanner gives every result with sound, so you hear the answer before you see it. The tones are made by your phone itself; nothing is downloaded.
- Cleared (green): two short tones going up. None of your allergens is on the label.
- Contains your allergen (red): three low tones going down, and one long low tone. This sound is deliberately unlike anything else.
- Unknown or not found (grey): one short, low tone. We don't know; read the pack or ask someone to read it with you.
Vibration. On Android phones the phone vibrates as well: one short tap for green, two short taps for grey, and three long pulses for red. An iPhone does not let websites vibrate; there you only hear the tones.
Silent mode. An iPhone with the silent switch on does not play the tones. Turn the sound on if you want to rely on the sound. If you use VoiceOver, it does read out the result, even in silent mode.
With a screen reader
- The result of a scan is read out straight away by VoiceOver (iPhone) and
TalkBack (Android): first the verdict, for example
Contains milk
, then the explanation and the name of the product. The colour and the tick or cross are never the only cue; the verdict is always there in words as well. - After a result, the focus is on the
Scan the next one
button. - A clean green result moves on by itself to the next product after five seconds. Red, grey, and green with a warning about traces stay on screen until you move on yourself.
- The number of search results is read out when it changes, without your focus jumping.
- Buttons with only an icon, such as the torch and close, have a name the screen reader speaks.
Aiming without looking
The hardest part is getting the camera onto the barcode. What helps: hold the pack a hand's width (15 to 25 centimetres) in front of the camera and turn it slowly round; the barcode is usually on the back or the bottom. You hear the tone as soon as it has been read. On a dark shelf the torch button helps. You can also type the numbers under the barcode into the field below the camera image.
Keyboard, zoom and motion
- The finder, the filters and the Scanner are built to work with the keyboard. You can always see where the focus is, and at the top of the page there is a link to jump straight to the results.
- You can make the text larger with your browser or phone settings; the page adapts instead of scrolling sideways.
- If you have reduced motion in your device's settings, the animations are off, including the scan line in the camera.
- The site follows your device's dark mode.
What is not right yet
- The site has not been tested by an outside party against the accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.2, level AA), and has not yet been tested extensively by blind or partially sighted users. This is what we built ourselves, not a certification.
- The Scanner cannot yet help you aim with sound (for example by beeping faster as the barcode gets closer).
- The automatic move on after a green result cannot be switched off.
An allergen check you can't use is no check. Do you run into something, or does something work differently from what it says here? Email info@ingredientenlijst.nl or use the contact page. Tell us which phone or screen reader you use; then we can reproduce it.
