Peanut allergy: shopping peanut-free
Peanut allergy is one of the most common and most severe food allergies. Peanut is a legume, not a nut, and is therefore listed separately: a product labelled nut-free can still contain peanut.

Good to know
Recently with peanut in the recipe (8)These products recently took peanut onto their label: the recipe changed. This is exactly where reading the label matters most.
Cross-contamination and “may contain traces”Peanut is often processed on the same line as nuts, chocolate and snacks.
Peanut is often processed on the same line as nuts, chocolate and snacks. With a peanut allergy, ‘kan sporen van pinda bevatten’ is almost always a reason to leave the product.
Symptoms and when to see a doctorPeanut allergy is among the allergies that most often cause a severe reaction: swelling, hives, vomiting, breathing difficulty, a drop in blood pressure.
Short of breath, a swelling tongue or throat, or dizzy after eating? Use the adrenaline auto-injector if one has been prescribed and call 112 straight away. Even if it then seems to get better.
Peanut allergy is among the allergies that most often cause a severe reaction: swelling, hives, vomiting, breathing difficulty, a drop in blood pressure. Symptoms usually start within minutes. Anyone prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector carries it at all times.
Is arachide oil the same as peanut oil?
Yes. Arachide is the French name for peanut; arachideolie is peanut oil and must always be declared as peanut in the EU.
Is there peanut in satay sauce?
Almost always: satay sauce is peanut-based. Many Indonesian and Thai sauces, snack mixes and coated nuts contain peanut too.
Does a peanut allergy go away?
Usually not; about one in five children grows out of it. Early introduction in babies lowers the chance of the allergy, but that is a matter for the paediatrician, not the label.
What this site does and does not do
We read the ingredient list and the allergen declaration as the supermarket publishes them, and hide every product that contains the allergen. Products without allergen information are hidden by default too: unknown is not the same as safe. What we cannot do is read the pack in the shop. Recipes change, and the information here can lag behind. When in doubt the label in your hand decides, and for questions about your health your doctor or dietitian.
